The Milliard Diplomat keeps the top spot. It's still sold, and its long run of steady owner feedback is something the newer lattice-frame brands can't match yet, though it's heavy and costs the most.
Five of the 2021 picks are out. The Zinus Resort and the Lucid Rollaway can't be bought new, and the Saemoza and Kealive listings are gone. We also dropped the D&D Futon Furniture sleeper chair, because the brand recalled similar folding foam beds in 2019 for failing the federal mattress flammability standard. The Maxyoyo Folding Sofa Bed now covers the chair-bed role. The Cozzzi Trifold and Regalo My Cot stay, and the Coleman ComfortSmart Big & Tall replaces the older version of the same cot.

Most of our choices for this category made it through this round of updates unscathed, but we did decide to thin our list out a bit, being as some of our selections felt a little redundant (given how closely they resembled other rankings), and noticing that some weren’t immediately available. The choices we eliminated were the Zinus Weekender Elite, SpaceMaster iBed and Malouf Structures.
We also added two new picks to this list, and it could be argued that they might have missed the mark for this category, but we feel that both models may be of interest to users shopping in this space: people looking for ways to help their home provide additional accommodations without actually investing in a full-sized bed.
The first option, the Kealive Convertible Sofa Chair, is a small armchair that transforms into a cushioned cot. It isn’t the most luxurious unit out there, and some users have questioned its durability, but we still thought it was worth including at the bottom of our list, in the interest of folks who are short on both space and funds.
The second option, the Saemoza Multi Function, is similar to our new pick from Kealive in that it’s also a convertible armchair, but more versatile because it can also be configured as an ottoman. And although it doesn’t have armrests (which is one feature that the Kealive has over it), it does look to be quite large and comfortable, and boasts a 440-pound weight capacity.

For those who'd rather not deal with the setup and regular re-pumping of an air mattress, or people who would prefer to sleep on something solid rather than inflatable, a rollaway bed is the way to go. They're easy to store and many come with luxurious memory foam mattresses that could rival a traditional bed. When outfitted with the right set of sheets and a comfy pillow and blanket, a folding bed can provide a sound night of rest to visitors. Some are even compact enough to take camping or for use in RVs.
Today's update saw the removal of the Edward Roll Away due to availability issues. We took the opportunity to recommend the SpaceMaster iBed in its stead. The SpaceMaster model is remarkably compact, yet comfortable and capable of supporting adults up to 350 pounds. It has a medium firmness and is rigorously tested during the manufacturing process to ensure its high quality.
We said goodbye to the Milliard Premium Luxurious, which suffered from a handful of quality control issues, such as poor welding. We sussed out the Milliard Diplomat as a more reliable offering from the same company that doesn't sacrifice any of the comforts of the previous listing. We also removed the SoundAsleep Dream Series Air, which, despite being a great air mattress, does not quite fall in line with the category and felt out of place on this list.

Rollaway, Cot Or Floor Bed?

Folding beds come in four main types, and the right one depends on how often guests stay and where the bed lives between visits. A rollaway is a steel frame with a wire or slatted deck and a foam mattress, on wheels. It folds in half and stands upright, about 14 inches deep, so it can roll into a closet. It gives the best sleep of the folding types, but most weigh 40 to 75 pounds. Small Sweet Home's roundup of rollaways lists the same trade-offs again and again: heavy, awkward to fold, and a mattress that is either too firm or too soft (Small Sweet Home).
A camp cot stretches fabric over a light steel or aluminum frame. It weighs about 20 pounds, packs into a bag and sits off the ground, but most are only 28 to 30 inches wide. That suits camping, kids and short visits better than a guest room.
Tri-fold foam mattresses and fold-out chair beds sit on the floor. They're the easiest to store and need no assembly, and a chair bed earns its floor space as a seat during the day. Both are a poor fit for anyone who struggles to get up from the floor.
Weight Ratings, Mattress Thickness And Width
Listed weight limits on folding beds run from about 250 to 450 pounds, and heavy-duty models from specialty sellers go past 1,000 pounds (foldingbed.net). Treat the number as a ceiling, not a target, and leave a margin over the heaviest sleeper. People sit on the edge, kids jump, and the frames that sag or crack after a couple of years tend to be the ones used near their limit.
Mattress thickness matters more than the label suggests. Most rollaways ship with four or five inches of foam, and the same specialty seller recommends five to six inches for real comfort. Some buyers find the mattress thinner than listed, so a topper is a cheap fix for longer stays.
Width is the other choice. A cot size, about 31 inches, fits small rooms and takes cot sheets. A twin, about 38 inches, is the comfortable size for one adult. A full, about 54 inches, is the only folding size that suits two people, and it weighs much more.
Safety: Flammability, Pinch Points And Wheels
