Molo Softseating Folding Paper Stool There aren't many models out there like the Molo Softseating Folding Paper Stool. This eye-catching choice has an accordion-like design that stretches to become a stool, bench, and more, when you connect multiple pieces with the magnetic end panels. You'll probably need a place to sit down when you see the price, though. molodesign.com

Nordic Style Natural Teak The Nordic Style Natural Teak is no boring utilitarian model, as the solid wood construction is handsome in addition to strong. A water-resistant choice, it can be used in the shower and boasts sustainably-harvested wood for your peace of mind. etsy.com

ThingDesign Abstract Minimal 23 Although the ThingDesign Abstract Minimal 23 is dainty and attractive, it's no delicate flower. The polyester top is robust and complete with UV protection, while the frame is solid wood for longevity. Each stands 12 inches tall. society6.com

Editor's Notes

August 04, 2020:

At this time, we have taken an especially close look at safety, since a weak or poorly designed folding stool can cause injuries. It is for this reason that we ultimately decided to remove the popular Handy Laundry Lightweight. The chance of it collapsing may not be huge, but it's enough of a risk to be worrisome, nevertheless. We also decided not to include any disc-type telescoping stools at this time. Models of this type struggle to be sturdy enough to justify their use, even though they are admittedly very portable. But no matter how strong and reliable a folding stool is, remember that you need to use it correctly by following all the safety rules and weight restrictions offered by the manufacturer.

With that said, we still think the Linon Home Decor Keira remains a great option for a barstool type, while the Acko 2-Step is a good choice if you need a stool that's a step ladder. If your budget is a bit more expansive, there's also the QQXX Portable, which is more eye-catching than much of the utilitarian competition. At the opposite end of the aesthetic spectrum, the Vigar Compact is plain but efficient, but be sure to watch your fingers when you fold it up, or you might find them pinched. The Zimmer Heavy Duty and the MityLite Flex One are also quite simple, both with an integrated carrying handle for your convenience.

Many people count folding stools as one of those must-have items that just make life a little bit easier. Easy to stow away when you don't need them and quick to set up when you do, they are perfect for small apartments and those who frequently entertain guests.

You'll want a stool that is durable, easy to set up and take down, and reasonably comfortable. In a step stool, you should consider how high you can comfortably raise your foot because some provide as much as 18 inches of lift. For some people, the item's folded dimensions are also important because storage space is limited.

In this update, we evaluated our selections for strength and ease of use, favoring items that are either pre-assembled or that are easy to put together. Added the QQXX Portable as a clever dual-use item whose double practicality helps justify its relatively high cost.
