Updated July 17, 2020 by Brett Dvoretz

This wiki has been updated 19 times since it was first published in May of 2020. Let's face it, tearing your kids away from their screens to get some dirt under their fingernails is not going to be easy. Whether you want them to actually help with the weeding or are simply hoping to get them into the fresh air, these kits are a fun way to coax them into giving it a go in the garden. Please be advised, these sets are not for use by children under three years of age. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Children's Gift Set CGA-017 Based in Lowestoft, UK, Harrod Horticultural boast that they've struck the ideal balance between decoration and functionality. Made from rubberwood and solid stainless steel, their hand trowel and fork certainly fit this claim. Also included in this gift set is a pair of gloves and an attractive trug. harrodhorticultural.com

Editor's Notes

July 08, 2020:

Since this list was compiled for kids, we thought it important to focus on the playful and not just the practical. Some of the sets are little more than toys disguised as tools, giving your little ones a fun way to pretend to garden alongside Mom or Dad, even if they won't get much real work done. This is the reason for including the Liberty Imports Wagon and Tools, and the Melissa & Doug Sunny Patch Pretty Petals Tote Set.

Some children will want to be much more hands-on and learn the basics of growing for real, so we included models that offer educational material like the Innocheer with STEM Learning Guide and the Clever Kid Toys Set.

A couple of the sets, of course, do both - The World of Eric Carle Very Hungry Caterpillar 96506 takes a familiar children's book character for inspiration and then applies it to a set of durable metal tools that can withstand any kind of regular garden work. Similarly, the Hortem Wheelbarrow Set, although outrageously pink, uses quality materials so your child can really get involved without fear of breaking their new toy.

We also thought the Born Toys Garden Set was worthy of its high place on the list as it gives children the chance to dress-up, perfect for those who love to immerse themselves in the role of the budding gardener.

A wandering writer who spends as much time on the road as in front of a laptop screen, Brett can either be found hacking away furiously at the keyboard or, perhaps, enjoying a whiskey and coke on some exotic beach, sometimes both simultaneously, usually with a four-legged companion by his side. He has been a professional chef, a dog trainer, and a travel correspondent for a well-known Southeast Asian guidebook. He also holds a business degree and has spent more time than he cares to admit in boring office jobs. He has an odd obsession for playing with the latest gadgets and working on motorcycles and old Jeeps. His expertise, honed over years of experience, is in the areas of computers, electronics, travel gear, pet products, and kitchen, office and automotive equipment.
