Before purchasing a gutter elbow, take note of what direction you'd like to divert water toward.

This is where an important distinction shoppers should be aware of comes into play. Models labeled style A will angle a downspout frontwards or backwards when installed. In contrast, style B models will angle a downspout sideways when installed. Obviously, this specification does not apply to the Flex-Drain line, which can be set in any direction.

While this specification didn't bear too much on our ranking, we made sure that the top spot was occupied by a model that is available in both styles.

Another factor to pay close attention to is the material an elbow is made of. Anyone afraid that a weed whacker or other landscaping implement might damage a gutter elbow should opt for a model made of metal, like the Amerimax 49065. On the other hand, vinyl models, such as the Genova Products AW201A, are typically less expensive and easier to install.
