Editor's Notes

September 17, 2020:

Washable area rugs are available in a variety of sizes, colors, and textures. Depending on the size of your washer and top-load or front-load capabilities, you must consider the material, pile height, and undersurface. Nevertheless, follow the manufacturer's care instructions to ensure longevity.

The pile height will determine how the carpet feels underfoot and how easy or difficult it is to clean. Generally, the lower the pile (less than 1/4-inches), the easier it is to clean, and the more suitable it is for high-traffic areas. A short pile, like the Amida Abstract, not only hides dirt, but you can vacuum it between washings. Medium pile rugs stand about 1/2-inch high. They feel soft and are suitable for placement anywhere in the home.

Long piles (over 1/2-inch) tend to offer more comfort. In fact, options like the Ophanie Fluffy Shag are soft enough to lie on. But when it comes to placing furniture on them, they are not the best choice. The legs may leave indentations, or the fibers may wrap around the legs. Either way, the rug will wear quickly.

Also, check to see what type of backing is on the rug, Not all brands have a non-skid bottom to prevent sliding. The HEBE Reversible, for example, requires a pad for safe use. The Ruggable Watercolor Abstract two-piece design makes it the most durable and cost-efficient option on this list. Since you only throw the top part in the washer, the bottom portion maintains its structure for continued use.

Area rugs differ in so many ways, each with advantages and downfalls. Still, they help bring style and comfort to your home.
