The 10 Best Portable Beds

Updated October 18, 2019 by Brett Dvoretz

This wiki has been updated 27 times since it was first published in February of 2018. Getting a good night's rest when you're not at home can be tricky. Luckily, these portable beds take the stress out of catching some ZZZs when your're visiting friends or relatives, or camping out in the wilderness. You can throw them in the trunk or backseat of your car and, as most are easy to store, your house won't be overtaken by furniture you only use occasionally. When users buy our independently chosen editorial recommendations, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. The Futon Shop Folding Bed Environmentally-conscious households will appreciate that the foam in this bed is made up of 50 percent soybean oil, rather than the petroleum that is often found in similar products. It's hand-sewn, has a removable polyester cover, and is available in most of the sizes you'd find for a traditional mattress, ranging from twin to California King. thefutonshop.com

Editor's Notes

September 27, 2019:

The type of portable bed one might need will depend entirely on where and how they sleep when away from home. To make sure we have one to suit every use, we rounded up some models ideal for camping in a tent, staying at a friend's place, and RVing, as well as some versatile options that can work in many scenarios. For finicky sleepers who require their temporary bedding to be quite similar to their permanent resting surface, the Quictent SSB-6154, with its thick foam mattress and spring coil base is ideal. It folds up and packs into the included carrying bag to easily transport it from one location to the next. The Coleman Camping Cot is ideal when you want to bring a home-like feeling to a campsite, since it is comfortable, supportive, and elevated, yet packs down very compactly when it is time to take it on the go.

If you need something simple that will get the job done when you need a place to sleep in a pinch, get the Alpcour Deluxe Cot. It has a pillow and a pocket for your belongings, so just add a blanket or sleeping bag and you're ready to snooze. As for cluttered households that need one piece of furniture to do multiple jobs, there is the Cozzzi Trifold and the Milliard Dual-Function, both of which can be configured into a couch or bed.

Should your vehicle serve as your accommodations for the night, there's the Hiraliy ABCD, which is specifically designed to fill the back seat of a car, but can also be used on the floor or ground thanks to its rugged bottom and two-part construction. If you aren't quite sure where your adventures will have you resting, the FBSport Travel Mat rolls up much like a sleeping bag, and can be easily taken just about anywhere.

A wandering writer who spends as much time on the road as in front of a laptop screen, Brett can either be found hacking away furiously at the keyboard or, perhaps, enjoying a whiskey and coke on some exotic beach, sometimes both simultaneously, usually with a four-legged companion by his side. He has been a professional chef, a dog trainer, and a travel correspondent for a well-known Southeast Asian guidebook. He also holds a business degree and has spent more time than he cares to admit in boring office jobs. He has an odd obsession for playing with the latest gadgets and working on motorcycles and old Jeeps. His expertise, honed over years of experience, is in the areas of computers, electronics, travel gear, pet products, and kitchen, office and automotive equipment.
