Editor's Notes

March 01, 2019:

Part of the appeal to me for any type of drone is a combination of the aircraft's maneuverability, ease of control, and its video capturing capabilities. That said, I did my best to find options that meet most of these criteria, while appealing to both adults and kids alike, although I must say some of the more pricey models are terrific for adult hobbyists and those looking for professional, military-grade surveillance capabilities. The DJI Mavic Air not only supports HD video at 4K resolution, but its fast-acting burst function for merging 25 photos into a single panoramic shot makes it a perfect option for target tracking. Included the Contixo F20 for its automatic circling function, one-touch takeoff, and preset flight paths. The inclusion of extra propellers and a storage backpack is also quite convenient, particularly for beginners. I thought the Holy Stone HS700 was a well-rounded, adult-geared option, thanks to its built-in GPS and hands-free follow function. The headless mode on the Potensic D80 is great for tracking, especially when a beginner is just learning how to control the device, knowing that the aircraft will maintain the same orientation as the direction the operator is facing. Added the Parrot Anafi for the hinged design, allowing its legs to quickly unfold, and its geofencing capabilities for defining flight boundaries. I also included the QCopter QC1 due to its integrated LEDs for nighttime use. The Le-Idea Foldable not only has several available speed settings, but it can also follow a predetermined flight path and withstand very windy conditions. Finally, both the ScharkSpark Thunder and Snaptain S5C are capable of performing 3D flips, while the ABS construction on the Syma Mini makes it a dependable choice for children who may be rough on their first quadcopter.
