January 25, 2021:
Smart has a certain connotation these days as being capable of internet or some other form of wireless connectivity. Unfortunately, there are still only a few options on the market that offer this functionality, so we have chosen to expand the category to also include microwaves equipped with sensors that allow them to adjust the time and temperature to perfectly cook your food. Falling into the former category, we have the Amazon Smart Oven, GE JES1097, Toshiba ML-EM34P, and AmazonBasics Small, all of which integrate with either Alexa or Google Assistant, depending on the model. In the latter category, we have the Samsung MS14K6000, Panasonic NN-SN67KS, Panasonic NN-SN68KS, and Farberware FMO13AHTPLE, which utilize the aforementioned smart sensors to add some level of automation to cooking your food.

Currently there is a clear winner in this category, which is no more expensive than a traditional microwave, yet has an abundance of features. It's likely that in the future there will be many more smart hub-ready units offered, but for now the biggest choice is whether or not you want to incorporate Alexa. If not, you can still get smart sensing technology, you just won't be able to speak to your appliance.
