The 10 Best Steel Shelving Units

Updated August 18, 2019 by Quincy Miller

This wiki has been updated 23 times since it was first published in December of 2016. A steel shelving unit can provide you with sturdy storage space for years to come. Our selections let you choose between rugged racks capable of holding hundreds of pounds and more decorative options perfect for the kitchen and other areas inside the home. Whichever you choose, consider anchoring it to the wall, as they can cause injury if tipped over. When users buy our independently chosen editorial recommendations, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Special Honors

Little Giant This squat little model has a rear panel that's been welded on, so you don't have to worry about things falling out the back. It can support a ton of weight (literally), making it a smart choice for shops and garages. zoro.com

Gladiator GarageWorks If you need more than one rack to tame the mess in your home or shop, this complete system comes with six 77-inch models that you can connect or use individually. Each has four tiers that offer a generous amount of space. garage-organization.com

Edsal Freestanding Ideal for storing sizable items, this three-tiered model gives you ample room between each shelf. Its double-riveted beams lock into the corner posts to create a safe, stable platform. lowes.com

Editor's Notes

August 14, 2019:

Most of the choices listed here are wire racks, some of which have mats or other solid surfaces lining their shelves. The ones that don't are better able to let water through, and are less likely to accumulate dust, debris, and dead bugs. The downside, of course, is that smaller objects can fall through the cracks. Whether or not you need a liner is up to you, and will be determined largely by what you hope to store on the rack. Don't forget that you can always purchase liners at a later date if you decide you need them. Then again, if you're looking to wrangle a large quantity of small items, you might be better off going with a steel storage cabinet instead.

A few models, like the Topeakmart Garage, can be disassembled and rearranged into multiple configurations or even multiple units. While undoubtedly convenient, that ability didn't factor much into our rankings, as we were more interested in finding the single unit that performed its job the best, not the one that could multitask most capably.

One feature that did factor into our rankings, albeit slightly, is the ability to put the rack on wheels. You'll notice our top choice can be used with or without casters; we feel this adds to the core usability of the piece, and so gave wheeled units a slight bump.
