The 10 Best Therapeutic Mattresses

Updated May 21, 2020 by Daniel Imperiale

This wiki has been updated 24 times since it was first published in March of 2018. Not all sleeping surfaces are created equal, and a good therapeutic mattress can mean the difference between years of restful nights and endless tossing and turning. The options that have made the cut on our list offer comfort in a variety of ways, often with layers of memory foam, and some choices include heavy-gauge springs, supportive edges, and waterproof covers, too. When users buy our independently chosen editorial selections, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Purple Hybrid Premiere This combination foam and spring offering received a number one rating from J.D. Power for customer satisfaction, and offers their top-of-the-line model in a pair of support densities. You can customize your order to include things like sheets, pillows, and even a platform bed, and both shipping and returns are free. The investment is a little on the high side, however. purple.com

Intellibed Midnight This company's highest-level model offers seven layers designed to provide exceptional support and cooling power, including an array of 15-gauge coils and two gel matrices separated by a section of padding. The top portion consists of a phase changing material that absorbs body heat and carries it away from the sleeping surface. All those components take up a lot of space, though, and this is one of the tallest options on the market at over 16 inches. intellibed.com

Editor's Notes

May 20, 2020:

We sent the Ommage Sleep Ethereal packing, as its predominantly latex construction made it a non-starter for anyone with an allergy, and since the odds of it arriving without an obnoxious odor were low. We also got rid of the Night Therapy 10-Inch, which turned out to have some trouble releasing body heat.

That heat issue tends to be one of the most prominent in this category, with companies going to great lengths to solve it. Hybrid options like the Tempur-Pedic Adapt are often the best for hot sleepers, as the space they dedicate to their coils creates more room for airflow. These tend not to be your traditional springs either; they're heavy-gauge versions, often individually encased and designed to provide support without succumbing to the floppiness that plagues most spring mattresses over time.

We also added the Lucid Odor Reducing to our list, which is a model infused with a variety of substances designed to help fight odor and bacteria, including charcoal, bamboo, and aloe vera, the last of which may also offer some cooling properties not unlike the way aloe vera gel can be good for a sunburn.
