Editor's Notes

February 24, 2021:

Versatility is key with these tortilla keepers, as they will not only keep them warm and ready for serving but, depending on the material, can be used to heat them in a microwave or an oven. In this update to the ranking, most of the current choices were found to be high-quality options that don't need replacing, with the exception of the Fox Run Terra Cotta, due to availability concerns. In its place, we selected the Thread West Genuine Mexican Tortilleros, a handwoven basket with vibrant designs and bright colors. These perhaps don't have the same insulating capacity as some of the rigid options, but will undoubtedly brighten up a dining table and add a touch of flair to taco night.

Tortillas generally come in two sizes, 8-inch and the larger 12-inch ones used more often for burritos. The Kook Ceramic and the RSVP Stoneware are both 8-inch options that are suitable for use in an oven, with the former standing at 4 inches tall, making it ideal for families. The Carlisle Jumbo is made from thick plastic that is microwave and dishwasher safe and is capable of holding 12-inch tortillas, and is available in a range of rustic colors. Likewise, the Endeas Largest Two-Sided is a fabric option that can comfortably hold up to 15 12-inch tortillas and is easy to store and transport, making it a good choice for taking on holiday. The Thread West Genuine Mexican Tortilleros come in a range of sizes and are available with or without lids making them suitable for serving a variety of dry foods and baked goods.

Unfortunately, at this time, the Campeon 92171 has become difficult to find, so we have opted to remove it. Taking its place is the Kook Ceramic, which offers a fun, festive look, just like the former — but it's far easier to clean. In fact, it is top-rack dishwasher safe, so there's little work to do. The only drawback is that it wasn't designed for your oven. If you need a model that can take the heat, we'd suggest looking at the RSVP Stoneware. But it, too, has a slight downside, in that it's just a touch too small to comfortably accommodate 8-inch tortillas.

As for plastic models, the Norpro 1066, Nordic Ware 10-Inch, and Dexas Warmer all remain top choices. We especially like the silicone handle on the Dexas, but it can come off if not treated carefully, so it's perhaps not the best choice if you have kids who might be rough on it. There are also a couple of fabric models worth considering, including the FoodWarmer Company Fabric Pouch. It's a good option if you'll be having a picnic or if you have an RV or camper. Plus, it's easier to store than many, since it is flat and will fit in a cabinet or drawer with your kitchen towels and dish drying mat.
