The 10 Best Voice Translators

Updated January 06, 2021 by Will Rhoda

This wiki has been updated 16 times since it was first published in November of 2018. As friendly as people can be in other countries, there are some concepts you simply can't get across through pantomime. Before you head off on that round-the-world dream vacation, consider one of these voice translators. They take up a lot less space in a suitcase than 15 different dictionaries would, so you'll have more room for souvenirs in your luggage, and some can interpret images as well. When users buy our independently chosen editorial choices, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Editor's Notes

December 31, 2020:

With a huge amount of availability issues and a massive influx of new options in the category, the only sensible thing for us to do was tear this set of rankings right down and build it back from scratch, offering a full list of 10 new options.

Some of our favorites include the Vasco Mini 2 — which comes with a lifetime global data plan, so you won’t need to worry about monthly fees or connecting to Wi-Fi; the Kansing Text & Photo KADU-TLR2B07 — which can translate 107 languages online and, perhaps more impressively, 12 offline; and the Timekettle WT2 — a pair of earbuds that stood out in a category full of handheld devices.

Several models we ranked – including the Kansing Text & Photo KADU-TLR2B07 and Anfier W06 – go well beyond the call of duty for a voice translator, and feature image-translation functionality, which can be very helpful with things like reading menus and wayfinding in a foreign country.

These devices are a popular gift for elderly relatives or retirees doing a bit of traveling, and the last thing they need is to spend all day messing around with a faulty Bluetooth connection, which is why the top picks on this list all have big screens. You won't need to pair them with your phone, and they support a wide variety of languages. More niche options have features like offline translation, but the language selection is limited.

After deciding that the pen was mightier than the pliers, Canadian electrical contractor William Rhoda abandoned his career and headed back to college, where he majored in marketing and advertising and won a scholarship along the way to earning a diploma in creative communications. His past career landed him a depth of knowledge in tools and hardware, while his current career schooled him in audio, video and camera equipment. During his leisure time, he’s learned lots about outdoor gear, and years of tiresome backyard maintenance have taught him all about pools and hot tubs. His recreational pursuits include rest, relaxation and revolutionary action, and his roommate’s a hairless cat.
