Omaha Fashion Week's Spring 2019 Sizzle Reel

In Depth

Most people are familiar with fashion shows in major metropolises such as Paris or New York, but across the world organizations are putting on events that aim to debut the talent of emerging designers, models, photographers, and artists. Not only do these occasions put a spotlight on up-and-coming creatives, they also support local communities. Here, in no particular order, are groups hosting glamorous fashion events.

First, at #1, is RVA Fashion Week. Founded in 2008 by a group of VCU students, RVA Fashion Week showcases Richmond, Virginia's top models, leading designers, producers, choreographers, and stylists. This group's goal is to raise awareness of the arts culture hidden in Richmond by promoting independent boutiques and designers through support from local businesses, sponsors, vendors, participants, and guests.

Every year, RVA Fashion Week commits itself to collaborating with local businesses and designers to display Richmond's style, creativity, street culture, and arts by virtue of design. This event, and the team behind it, works to boost the local economy and uplift small businesses and boutiques. On a national level, RVA Fashion Week has garnered attention from some of the top agencies and publications.

For #2 we have Fashion Week Columbus, which debuted in 2010 to feature up-and-coming Ohio designers and models. This project is the flagship endeavor of the Columbus Fashion Council, which produces a full week of shows to expose local talent to media, buyers, and agencies, while also providing students in the industry with funding for their schooling.

The Columbus Fashion Council, which pioneered this event, is a non-profit organization seeking to expand the fashion economy in Central Ohio through a combination of industry growth initiatives, community organizer support, funding access opportunities and creative program development. The offered programs help to enable the success of emerging designers and engage the community.

Next on the list, at #3, is Fashion Week MN: a bi-annual event of runway shows, presentations, panels, and shopping affairs used to highlight the current collections of Minnesota-based designers, brands, and retailers. The event is organized by volunteers and is a community-oriented, not-for-profit organization.

The mission of Fashion Week MN is to cultivate an interconnected fashion economy of the North that drives and supports creativity while breeding opportunity in a global market. The team centers education, movement toward diversity, sustainability, support for small businesses, and investment into the community as components of the event's philosophy.

At #4 is New Zealand Fashion Week, a platform that enables local and international designers to showcase and promote their collections and brand. Its goal is to provide a launching pad for artists to grow their business both nationally and internationally. The event not only drives awareness for the designers involved, but for a range of other fashion and lifestyle companies.

New Zealand Fashion Weekend kicks off the main event to showcase what is in store for the rest of the week. This weekend bash features the best the industry has to offer with in-season shows and seminars offering an early glimpse at key spring and summer trends and the latest ranges from New Zealand's most beloved brands.

For #5, we have Omaha Fashion Week, which began in 2008 with only 12 designers, 20 models, and 2,000 attendees. It has since grown to become the fourth largest organized fashion week event in the country. This event centralizes the emerging talent of young Omaha designers. The crew partners with other groups in the area to help support the community.

Behind the glamorous red carpet event, there is a commitment to education and support for local culture, creativity, and innovation as drivers of economic stability and growth. Not only does this event showcase young designers, it also fosters creativity in children through the Omaha Fashion Camp, where kids can learn about a variety of careers in the fashion industry, as well as basic sewing, sketching, modeling, and photography skills.

Lastly, at #6 is LA Fashion Week, an organization dedicated to raising the profile of fashion in the United States with a focus on the emergence of Los Angeles as one of the most important cultural cities in the world. The event aims to support a growing community of artists and designers in the City of Angels.
