Most drugstore shampoos already skip drying alcohols like ethanol, so an alcohol-free label is less rare than it sounds. The catch is the conditioner: nearly every one uses waxy fatty alcohols such as cetyl, which soften hair. Those are fine for most people, but anyone in sober living or a rehab program may need a stricter label check.

Vanicream Free & Clear now leads because its label has no alcohol of any kind, not even the waxy fatty alcohols that most conditioners and many shampoos rely on. The old list worked from a loose rule that treated glycols, panthenol and phenoxyethanol as drying, which they aren't, so we rebuilt it around real ingredient lists.
365 Fragrance Free, CeraVe Gentle Hydrating, Honest Sensitive, Acure Ultra Hydrating, Attitude Extra Gentle, the Seaweed Bath Co. Gentle set and Desert Essence Fragrance Free are new. OGX Renewing now sells as a different formula, Latinoil, Prell and Acure Curiously Clarifying are unavailable, and we couldn't confirm the current Shea Moisture label, so they're out. The Vaadi, Shear Miracle, Laritelle and Nywele shampoos didn't turn up for sale. Odele leaves the special honors because its matching conditioner lists alcohol.
The evidence here was each maker's published ingredient list, read line by line on the day we checked and sorted into drying, fatty and preservative alcohols, plus a recall search for every brand. Formulas change, so the bottle in your hand has the final word.

We removed Botanic Hearth Deep Cleansing and Winsome & Wisdom BlondeMoment Purple due to availability concerns and replaced them with Shea Moisture Strengthen & Restore and Vanicream Free & Clear, respectively. Shea Moisture Strengthen & Restore is a great organic option that uses natural oils to replenish hair that is difficult to manage or is dried out due to heat styling or processing. However, it might not be the best for fine hair because of the high concentration of oils. Vanicream Free & Clear, on the other hand, is an extremely gentle option for people with extra sensitive skin. It uses mild cleansing agents that will clean your hair, but won’t strip away moisture. It is also free of common irritants such as gluten, fragrance, and parabens.

Like some of the others on our list, this one forms an impressive lather, and it aims to lock moisture in while ensuring both curly and straight tresses feel thicker.
The few ingredients that make up Vaadi Herbals Heena include coconut and olive oils, henna and green tea extracts, organic honey, and corn silk. It features a pleasant, mild fragrance that’s not fruity or flowery, but rather, clean and fresh.
Leaving the list today, since it’s no longer available, is Keralogie Kids. Also making an exit are LuxeOrganix, which can dry out and/or tangle the hair, as well as Sojourn Colour Preserve, amid reports the bottle leaks rather easily.

Three Kinds Of Alcohol On A Shampoo Label
Benzyl alcohol is a preservative, and glycerin, panthenol and glycols such as caprylyl glycol are moisture-holding helpers.
Not every ingredient with "alcohol" in its name does the same job. The drying kind is the one most people mean: ethanol, which labels may call alcohol, alcohol denat. or SD alcohol, plus isopropyl alcohol. An alcohol-free shampoo brand sums them up this way in its own guide (Madame d'Alexis), and none of the shampoos on this list contains them.
The second kind is fatty alcohol: cetyl, stearyl, cetearyl and behenyl. These are waxy solids made from plant oils, and they soften hair and thicken creams rather than drying anything out (CosmeticsInfo). The third group sounds similar but works differently. Benzyl alcohol is a preservative, and glycerin, panthenol and glycols such as caprylyl glycol are moisture-holding helpers.
Some names fool shoppers. Cetrimonium chloride, glycol distearate and coco-glucoside all come from fatty alcohols but aren't alcohols themselves. Vanicream Free & Clear is a rare label with none of the three groups at all.
Shampoo And Conditioner: Why Sets Rarely Pass A Strict Test
The second most common search behind this page asks for an alcohol-free shampoo and conditioner. The honest answer is that conditioners almost always use fatty alcohols, because that's how they soften and detangle. Every conditioner we checked had them: Acure Ultra Hydrating Conditioner lists cetearyl and cetyl alcohol, and the Seaweed Bath Co. Gentle Conditioner lists cetyl and stearyl. The Odele Smoothing Conditioner goes further and lists plain "Alcohol" next to its fatty alcohols.
For most people, fatty alcohols are a good thing. If you're avoiding only the drying kind, a matched set is fine. If a program or a doctor has told you to avoid every alcohol, buy a shampoo with none and skip conditioner, or use a leave-in oil whose label you've read.
Sober-living homes and rehab programs often limit toiletries that contain alcohol. Their rules differ, so ask for the facility's own list. A shampoo with no ethanol on the label is the safe reading of most of them, and big pump bottles of an unscented formula make sense for shared bathrooms.
Read The Back Of The Bottle, Not The Front
Front-of-bottle claims are loose. Desert Essence's fragrance-free shampoo is tagged alcohol-free by sellers, yet the maker's own list includes benzyl alcohol. CeraVe Gentle Hydrating is sold as sulfate-free while using sulfonate and sulfosuccinate cleansers, which are close relatives. Neither is a safety problem, but they show why the ingredient panel matters more than the badges.
Fragrance is the other blind spot. Under U.S. rules, scent ingredients can be listed simply as "Fragrance" (FDA), so a scented shampoo can't promise what's inside that one word. Fragrance-free and unscented formulas avoid the question, and they're also the usual advice for sensitive or allergy-prone scalps.
Makers also change formulas without changing names. Every list on this page was read on the maker's site on the date above, and both Vanicream and Whole Foods Market note that the package label is the final authority.
How we researched this
We compared 19 shampoos and sets, read the published ingredient lists for 10 of them on makers' and store sites, sorted every alcohol on those lists into drying, fatty or preservative types, analyzed owner feedback patterns, and checked each brand for recalls with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
