This wiki has been updated 3 times since it was first published in January of 2019. Advanced Micro Devices has long been one of the major players in consumer-level CPUs, and many of their latest processors are as good as, or better than, the competition. Plus, in another longstanding tradition, they tend to cost less than comparable models from the other big-name manufacturer. Here are some of the best AMD chips available for multiple levels of PC gaming. When users buy our independently chosen editorial selections, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Editor's Notes

January 27, 2019:

The historical underdogs when it comes to gaming hardware, AMD has been ramping up their performance lately, and is currently directly competing with Intel for a share of the gaming market. In fact, if you take price into consideration, the Red Team actually edges out the big guys in some categories. For example, their newest Athlon release has a frequency of nearly 4 gigahertz, and costs well under $100, which is certainly impressive. A step above that, the Ryzen 2200G doesn't cost much more, and comes with integrated graphics that are sufficient for many less-complex titles. If you want to future-proof your rig without taking out a second mortgage, the 2600 and its X variant are both quite powerful; the former is awfully fast for a 65W TDP unit, and comes with a smaller and quieter cooler, while the latter will chug along without difficulty in the most CPU-heavy games. The 2700 versions are quite near the front of the consumer-grade pack, though the X model can drive your PC's build cost up somewhat more. Threadrippers are useful if, in addition to 3D titles, you're a multimedia professional or systems analyst who works with huge files and multi-threaded applications. And if you're looking for the most bang for your buck, as well as a low power draw and great heat dissipation, take a good look at the 2400G, which provides both. One additional positive note on AMD's CPUs: unlike the other guys', each of these chips comes fully unlocked from the factory, enabling easy overclocking — so long as you have the right cooling setup.
