Editor's Notes

May 17, 2019:

When shopping for a bike rack for your RAV4, it's important to note, before anything else, which model year you own. Like other crossover SUVs, Toyota has changed the design significantly over the last few decades -- specifically, newer RAV4s lack the swinging rear gate and spare tire that made the older version, still wildly popular among drivers looking for a reliable sport utility vehicle, so iconic. As such, a carrier that is compatible with the former variant may not be so with the latter, and vice versa.

For our purposes, we included options on this list that fit a variety of RAV4 designs. The Hollywood Racks SR1, for example, is one of the few carriers that will accommodate the rear spare tire found on RAV4s circa the early 2000s. The Allen Sports Ultra Compact, on the other hand, should have no problem attaching to the vehicle's latest incarnation, which features a more traditional rear cargo door. And for owners of either version who have installed a trailer hitch, the Swagman XTC2, Thule Helium Aero, Kuat Sherpa 2.0 all allow for quick and convenient setup.

Overall, though, we judged the Hollywood Racks Over-The-Top best for most people, since its high-rise frame adjusts to fit a huge variety of trunk designs (its price isn't bad, either).
