The 10 Best Chain Link Fence Privacy Solutions

Updated March 06, 2021 by Sheila O'Neill

This wiki has been updated 15 times since it was first published in October of 2018. Chain link fences do a great job of delineating property lines and keeping dogs and kids in the yard. They're not ideal for privacy, though, since you can see through them. Luckily, there are plenty of solutions to this problem, from slats and screens to more natural-looking options like willow sticks and faux greenery. We've selected several choices in a range of aesthetics and price points. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Editor's Notes

March 03, 2021:

We decided to widen the scope of this category from slats alone to a range of options that can increase the opacity of a chain link fence. Most of our previous picks remained on the list in this update, but the Slat Depot White Tubes were removed due to concerns that they don't hold up very well to sun exposure.

While slats need to be woven between the links of a fence, which can be a time-consuming process, screens are fastened on with zip ties. They also don't have as many gaps, which is good for added privacy.

We've added two mesh screens to the list. The Windscreen4less Heavy Duty is offered in a variety of widths, ranging from 6' x 1' all the way to 6' x 300', so you can get exactly as much material as you need. The Sunnyglade Mesh comes in 50 foot lengths, but three different height options (4-, 5-, and 6-foot) and there are a range of neutral colors available.

Fenpro Tape provides a similar effect to slats, but is more cost-effective and flexible. It's meant to be woven diagonally through the links of a fence, held in place by brass fasteners (which are included). It comes in six colors, so you can either choose one that works for you or get creative by getting multiple colors and creating a striped pattern.

New to the list, the Petgrow Boxwood is made of artificial greenery that can give your fence the look of a lush hedge. Unlike the slats of the Fenpro Hedge, it comes in 20-inch squares, which can be attached to each other with interlocking connectors or cut with scissors for full customization.

If you want a truly natural look rather than an imitation, the Master Garden Products Willow is worth considering. While its wooden sticks might not hold up to the elements (or animals like squirrels) as well as other options, it's an eco-friendly choice that provides a charming aesthetic.

January 01, 2019:

Property owners absolutely love the look of privacy slats in their chain-link fences once they get them installed, which is easy enough to surprise many people. We were excited to find hedge slats that offer a truly unique look in this category, and ranked the widest slats at the top because of the increased privacy they offer.
