In making our selections for this list, we kept in mind that many individuals with gluten sensitivities also tend to have other food allergies, so we looked for pure ingredients lists void of many common irritants. We also wanted to make sure that we presented a good variety of options so that you could create nearly any recipe that relies on bread, from sweet stuff to savory items, without sacrificing flavor or texture.
Schar Artisan Baker caught our attention because it is free of preservatives, eggs, milk, and several other ingredients that can cause upset stomachs. Udi's White Sandwich, which doesn't contain any nuts, dairy, or soy, also snagged a spot. Those monitoring their glucose levels may like BFree Soft Loaf, because it has no added sugars, and Canyon Bakehouse Hawaiian, which, in spite of being sweet, has just three grams of sugar per slice.
Though gluten-free bread can have a reputation for having a weird consistency that's either too crumbly or too doughy, we wanted to make sure none of our picks had those weaknesses. We removed Katz Everything 18-Ounce because it easily dries up and falls apart. Udi's Cinnamon Raisin also has texture issues and can be too hard, so it lost its spot.
We understand that, even if you're cooking all gluten-free foods, when it comes to making certain types of sandwiches and snacks, sometimes, there is only a very particular type of bread that will do.
