The 9 Best Mailbox Posts
Editor's Notes
September 02, 2020:
When placing your mailbox post, you'll need to abide by the specific guidelines from the USPS. These guidelines state that your mailbox must be 41 to 45 inches, "from the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox or point of mail entry", and it must be placed 6 to 8 inches back from the curb. It's important to take these guidelines seriously, since you risk having to re-install your mailbox post if done incorrectly.
Even though our selections vary when it comes to exactly how they're installed into the ground, the majority of them will either have their own component that sinks below the surface, like the Addresses of Distinction Charleston, or, like the Mail Boss 7121, will actually slide over a separate 4x4 wooden post. This post will need to be purchased separately, so take that into account when choosing your model.
Regardless of the style, the best way to install your post into the ground is with a cement mixture. This might sound intimidating, but it's actually a pretty simple project. Typically you just dig a hole for your post, fill it with about 6-inches of gravel for drainage, set your post in the hole, then fill with concrete. A post hole digger can make this job a lot easier.
It also can't hurt to check your local government website or homeowners association to check for any additional regulations in your area.
Before doing any digging or excavation of any kind, always call 811 first to make sure there aren't any underground utilities in the area. Even small jobs like this can be extremely dangerous and serious injuries or death can occur if you dig in the wrong place.
Also, even though some of our options include a mailbox, like the Gibraltar Mailboxes Gentry, you may want to choose your own. This collection of mailboxes offers a nice range of options.
