The game of Monopoly has been a family favorite for decades, and will probably continue to be loved, or hated, for many more to come. Rather than letting the legacy die out, the game's makers have transcended its original boundaries and taken on the themes of many of our beloved TV shows, movies, and video games, ensuring it will remain a firm favorite for future generations. When users buy our independently chosen editorial choices, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Editor's Notes

April 24, 2020:

Monopoly is based on a board game called "The Landlord's Game," invented by Elizabeth Magie in 1903. Rather than being good family fun, it was actually designed to teach the trials and tribulations of money, and the negative impacts of capital accumulation. Hasbro acquired the licensing rights in 1991, and in 1994 a new wave of licensed products began. Nowadays there is a multitude of variations, featuring themes, locations, and characters from movies and TV shows old and new.

When choosing this ranking we tried to pick variants which bring something new to the original rhetoric, rather than choosing a theme where gameplay has been somewhat sacrificed in order to conform to a particular narrative. Movie aficionados may enjoy the Hasbro Gaming Avengers and the Star Wars Complete Saga Edition for their dynamic artwork and eclectic character selection. Likewise, the Game of Thrones edition captures the essence of the popular TV series. Rick and Morty and The Simpsons editions remain true to the animated cartoons and capture their unique style of humor.

Staying loyal to the original concepts of the game, the Cheaters Edition, Voice banking, and Monopoly Speed have uniquely tweaked the rule book to enhance the gameplay. By introducing new features and goals, it is now faster, more competitive, and ultimately more fun.
