The Armoury Silk Zig Zag This knit option comes from a company that started as a purveyor of fine clothing and grew to create several pieces of its own, including the series of ties from which this model comes. It pattern is not just about aesthetics, either, as it helps keep the weave together under stress, allowing it to last longer. It is a rather expensive choice, however. thearmoury.com

The Tie Bar This site offers a litany of fashionable items to choose from, including bow ties if you're feeling dangerous. They're known for producing high-quality goods for reasonable prices, most of which come in a run of sizes that makes their catalogue suitable for everyone from big and tall guys to slender mods in skin-tight suits. thetiebar.com

Editor's Notes

June 23, 2020:

A man or woman's choice of necktie is a pretty personal thing, so we wanted to make sure there were plenty of different styles to choose from in our ranking. Material and stitch quality concerns didn't take a backseat, however, and were even the main reason we said goodbye to the Jacquard Woven from our previous list, as the materials were just a little too cheap. It was a decent value option, but the Original Penguin Smith Solid represents an enormous leap in quality for a relatively small increase in price, which you can feel instantly in the thickness of the fabric and the sturdiness of its knots. And the seamwork on the Amazon Essentials Men's Classic is something of a knock on the offering, but it's just good enough that it's easily justified given its cost.

We also sent off the Dr. Who option on our old list, as it was too niche a choice and could theoretically be worn only so many times before your family or coworkers got sick of it. Ties like the Calvin Klein Steel Solid A and the John William Clothing Skinny conversely are so versatile in their simplicity that you can mix and match them with different suits and suit separates so consistently that they'll never get old. And for the traveling businessperson, we kept the Scott Allan Collection Striped, which is made from a wrinkle-resistant material that will keep it looking fresh no matter how you pack it.
