The 10 Best Platform Beds

Updated August 27, 2020 by Melissa Harr

This wiki has been updated 26 times since it was first published in January of 2017. Given that, without a good night's sleep, it's nearly impossible to function properly the next day, a bed is the single most important piece of furniture in your home. Platform models are a popular choice as they eliminate the need for a box spring, and our top picks come in a wide variety of styles that range from classic to ultra contemporary, and at price points to fit almost any budget. When users buy our independently chosen editorial choices, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. VIG Furniture Modrest Opal If you tend to think of platform beds as cheap or flimsy, the VIG Furniture Modrest Opal should dispel those notions. The handsome walnut finish, leatherette upholstered headboard, and simple, clean lines give this piece a sleek, modern appearance that will suit even the most sophisticated of decor schemes. inmod.com

The Bed by Thuma The Bed by Thuma, unlike many, has no MDF or particle board; instead, it boasts repurposed wood that's just as strong as it is attractive. Plenty of other thoughtful touches make it a sound investment, as well, from the felt-lined slats to the cork-padded legs that protect your floors. thuma.co

CB2 Simple The CB2 Simple certainly lives up to its name, with a black, powder-coated iron base that can be used alone or paired with a headboard. It conveniently comes in standard sizes, from twin to California king, and has sturdy pine slats you can count on. cb2.com

Editor's Notes

August 24, 2020:

Although several models from Zinus made the cut, we've updated our top choice to the Zinus Suzanne, which has three USB ports and a small shelf in the headboard, handy touches that are not common to simple platform beds. But we removed the Zinus Button Tufted, which has some issues with the center support. The Zinus Shawn remains a good choice, however, especially for those on a tight budget, or those who want simple, not decorative.

And speaking of decorative, we still like the KD Frames Nomad, which you can paint at home to meet your exact decorative requirements, and we've added the DHP Modern Canopy, for those who want an airy canopy bed. This DHP option is quite heavy, so it's not the best choice for those who need something that's easy to move. For a truly eye-catching look, we kept the Nexera Nordik, which appears to float. You can accentuate this design by adding LED strip lights underneath.

April 04, 2019:

In addition to being attractive, the Zinus Ironline earned the top spot for its durable construction, affordable price and the fact that it comes with padded and nonslip tape to hold your mattress in place and prevent it from making noise when you lie down or roll over. If you're looking for something simple that will be mostly hidden by your mattress, the In Style Furnishings Stella and KD Frames Nomad are both excellent minimalist options, and the Nexera Nordik takes this concept to the next level by hiding the legs to make it appear to be floating. The Sleep Master Foundation may not win any awards for style, but it's priced affordably, can hold an impressive amount of weight, and is easy to set up in just a few minutes. The Zinus Button Tufted and Baxton Studio Colchester have upholstered headboards for a more decorative look, and the Greatime Contemporary has a unique design that's reminiscent of a sleek, low-profile leather couch.
