The 10 Best Silicone Oven Mitts
Special Honors
Williams Sonoma Ultimate Although they're pricier than many options, these mitts are built for long-term use. Constructed by dipping the cotton lining into silicone, they're heat resistant to an impressive 650 degrees Fahrenheit and can be tossed in with the laundry when they get dirty. williams-sonoma.com
Five Two Silicone Unlike some of our picks, these mitts place the slit in the cuff opposite the thumb to maximize forearm protection. Magnets in the fabric allow them to be stored on the refrigerator, and the square pattern mimics a classic gingham look. food52.com
Editor's Notes
September 16, 2020:
Silicone oven mitts offer more heat protection than cotton products, and they're well-suited to hot handles on dutch ovens or cast-iron skillets. Our list focuses on models with high heat resistance that protect the forearm as well as the fingers. For infrequent use, a wider range of oven mitts or pot holders may work just as well.
Mittens like the Homwe Extra Long Professional are the most common shape, as they provide strong insulation while allowing enough dexterity for picking up pots and dishes. If you need to manipulate tools or tricky handles, consider five-finger designs like the Grill Armor Extreme or LoveU Double-Layer. Rectangular designs like the Oxo Good Grips Pot Holder can double as a trivet, but won't offer protection past the wrist.
One of the main advantages of silicone is that it will insulate your hands even when damp. The downside is that the shell holds in dirt and grime, so it's important to find a product that's easy to clean. Some models are approved for trips through the dishwasher, while others can be tossed in the washing machine. The Mastrad OrkaPlus has a separable liner, which allows the two parts to be cleaned individually.
Most products are "one size fits most," and they may not work well for cooks with especially large or small hands. When possible, check measurements and sizing to find a mitt that will work for you.
