Editor's Notes

July 08, 2020:

Unlike the run-of-the-mill benches you’ll find in the entryways, living rooms, and walk-in closets of many homes, storage benches combine convenient seating with the functions usually supplied by items like chests and shoe racks. Often the first piece of furniture a person will encounter when they enter a home, these hybrids come in a range of styles that can set many different tones.

Although they are mostly harmless, we would like to bring your attention to the limited set of dangers storage benches pose. Beyond the usual pinching and crushing of fingers one would expect from any heavy, hinged object, this type of furniture can be tempting for playful children. Sadly, children have suffocated after getting stuck in poorly ventilated containers, and as gruesome as it may sound, storage benches have the capacity to suddenly snap shut, potentially leading to very serious injuries. While we would not steer you away from purchasing a storage bench, we strongly urge you to set strict guidelines with any and all children that may come in contact with one in your own home or elsewhere.

The above being the case, although models like the Walker Edison Furniture Company Modern and Simpli Home Avalon have locking arms to help them remain propped open, one should remain wary of them suddenly shutting. Similarly, whereas the aforementioned units have two such arms, the Simpli Home Adams only has one arm, meaning you should double your vigilance when leaving its lid ajar.
