Editor's Notes

November 05, 2020:

The zippers on the Nonwe Outdoors tend to break easily, which we’ve noted in the listing. We also point out that the Frogg Toggs Bull Frogg features zippered openings at the bottom of each leg, which makes it quite a bit easier to put on and remove the pants, especially if you’re wearing shoes or boots.

While the Carhartt Mayne provide reliable protection from the elements, keep in mind that they don’t promote much airflow, which can cause some discomfort in hot weather. We also updated the listing of the Mountain Warehouse Pakka to indicate that the waist is not adjustable, which is somewhat frustrating, since these pants are designed to be worn over base layers.

Our only new addition — the Berghaus Deluge — are also intended to be worn over a normal pair of pants, making them ideal for cycling to work. The fabric features a durable waterproof coating, and users seem quite satisfied with the design and capacity of the pockets.

Though pricier than most of the items in the list, the KUIU Hunting Pants in the Special Honors section are a great choice for a diehard hunter who won’t settle for anything less than premium gear. They’re available in several styles at a range of price points.

November 05, 2019:

Both the North Face Resolve and Sierra Designs Hurricane were no longer available, and therefore eliminated from the rankings. We updated the listing for the Columbia Rebel Roamer with the latest version of the product. Based on reports of impressive durability in the face of tasks that require extensive physical activity, we slightly upgraded the position of the Carhartt Mayne.

Whereas many waterproof pants clearly favor functionality over aesthetics, the Jessie Kidden Winter provide a potent combination of the two. A baggy “clown-like” appearance is a common complaint for many pants of this type, but these have a stylish, tight-fitting design to go with a tough outer shell, a warm fleece lining, and several zippered pockets for storing accessories.

The Gash Hao Snowboard, another new addition, are tailor-made for skiing and other winter sports. We noted that they’re designed for both freedom of movement and heat retention, and users typically view them as an excellent value for their performance.

October 13, 2018:

Added a couple of products that stand out for their feature richness, and included an insulated pant in the selections. Re-evaluated each item's place on the list and changed the ranking of some based on value for the price.
