A Trip To The Australian Romance Novel Awards
Romance novels are mostly associated with British and American authors like Jane Austen and Nora Roberts. But that doesn't mean that some of the genre's most exciting work isn't coming from elsewhere, including the Down Under. In no particular order, here are 13 titillating novels penned by Australian women.
#1: "Holding Out" by Lila Rose. The plot revolves around Zara's life, which starts to get complicated when the head honcho of the company where she works begins desiring her. To have her, Talon needs to get past the main character's strong personality, the people surrounding her, and her ex-husband. The tension comes from the question of whether Talon's rugged image will be enough to quench Zara's longing for love.
#2: "Consumed" by Skyla Madi. Seth is the new kid in town. His manly sexiness is a treat for many girls, including Olivia. She cannot deny that she is attracted to him. However, she is still nursing a broken heart. She knows that she is not ready to have another man in her life. The thrills come from Olivia's own internal conflict, as well as the journey the two embark upon.
#3: "The Other Side of Us" by Sarah Mayberry. Oliver Barrett moves to a seaside neighbourhood hoping to find a fresh start. Mackenzie Williams is not in the mood to offer her new neighbour a friendly welcome. After his gestures are received with a cold shoulder, he keeps his distance from her.
His dog, however, becomes enamored with hers. The two canines are so interested in each other that they are willing to destroy the fence that separates them. This leads to their masters finding more time to get to know each other, until they realize that bad first impressions don't last forever.
#4: "Locked" by Maya Cross. Sophia Pierce is curious what is happening in the back room of a cheap bar. She sneaks past the security and finds herself in a lavish party where she meets Sebastian Lock. He is a gorgeous and charismatic man, and Sophia's attraction to him is so strong that she decides to stay with him that night.
Their casual sexual foray gets wilder as Lock introduces her to the pleasures of masochism. As their relationship deepens, Lock's secretive personality prevents Sophia from getting to know more about the man she is starting to care for.
#5: "Bad Romeo" by Leisa Rayven. Cassie Taylor is cast alongside Ethan Holt in their college play adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet." She is a good girl while he has a bad boy image. Despite their differences in personality, the two become a couple. When their relationship ends, Cassie is shattered. A few years after, the ex-lovers reunite in a Broadway show. While Cassie is afraid to love again, Ethan is determined to win her back.
#6: "Temptation" by K.M. Golland. Alexis Summer is a happily married woman and a mother of two beautiful kids. She has been a stay at home mom for over nine years, but decides to embark upon a new career. She starts working in a hotel owned by Bryce Clark; a gorgeous, funny, and confident man who is still searching for love. He is known as someone who always gets what he wants. No matter how hard she tries to dismiss her affection for her boss, she finds it impossible. This leaves her baffled as to whether she will give in to temptation, or will remain faithful to her husband and keep her family intact.
#7: "Black" by T.L Smith. The only person Liam Black cares about is a lonely girl he has loved since high school. He knows that he will never have a normal life, because killing other people for money is his livelihood. After saving her life when they were younger, he does the same when they meet again. But this time, she gets herself into drugs and works as a prostitute. With the kind of lives that they lead, the main character is not certain what the future holds for both of them.
#8: "Full Moon Rising" by Keri Arthur. The plot tells the story of the twins Riley and Rhoan. They are vampire-werewolf hybrids. Both work for the Directorate of Other Races, an organization that controls supernatural individuals like them and protects humans from their attacks. Riley is working in the office while her brother is an assassin.
One night, Rhoan goes missing while on a mission. To make the timing worse, Riley is feeling the heat of finding a mate while the full moon is on the rise. While fulfilling her body's desire is easy, bringing her brother back is challenging. She finds out that there is a secret institution that aims to clone non-humans like her and her brother, to create an ultimate warrior which can put the whole world in danger.
#9: "Tattered Love" by Lola Stark. The main characters of this book are lonely people looking for someone to share their experiences. Mace, an ex-Special Ops personnel, walks into a tattoo parlor owned by Scarlet. In that moment, he knows that he wants her. The two embark on ventures filled with steamy sex. However, both are afraid that their pasts will destroy what they have if they take their relationship to the next level.
#10: "A Beautiful Struggle" by Lilliana Anderson. This book features the story of a love triangle between Katrina, a law student, David, her best friend who really cares for her, and Elliot, a junior solicitor from the office where Katrina is working.
Everything is going well for Katrina until the lawyer arrives and shows an interest in her. Despite the office's policy against dating, the two develop a secret affair. David, on the other hand, is determined to stop the relationship and prevent Katrina from getting hurt again. The female lead character knows what is right, but she struggles to detach herself from her desire for Elliot.
#11: "Fighting Redemption" by Kate McCarthy. Ryan Kendall and Finlay Tanner are childhood friends. Growing up, Ryan knows that she is special to him, but he is afraid to show it for many reasons. At nineteen he joins the army and is eventually deployed to Afghanistan. When he returns home after six years, he's certain that he can't live without Finlay. However, his troubled past makes him uncertain whether he can give her the life she truly deserves.
