In Depth

New York City is known as one of the most inventive cities in the world. Whether it's entertainment, business, art, or education, the Big Apple tends to be at the center of it all. Perhaps that's why it should come as no surprise that it is a leader in innovative educational programs. If you're interested in learning more, here are five innovative schools in NYC, listed in no particular order.

Coming in at the #1 spot is Brooklyn Collaborative, an Outward Bound School that serves students in grades 6 through 12. They use the EL Education school model, which has its roots in Outward Bound. This place of learning strives to be a diverse and respectful community, committed to developing students and staff who are kind, open-minded, persistent, responsible, and courageous.

With support from peers, staff, families, and school partners, students engage in challenging academic and social experiences that prepare them for college-level learning and full participation in civic life. One interesting aspect of their curriculum is that every two weeks, the normal instructional schedule is suspended for Expeditionary Thursdays, where students complete academic fieldwork in trips outside their school building.

Up next at #2 is the Great Oaks Charter Schools, a network of educational institutions that prepare students for college success through high-dosage tutoring. They do this by ensuring that every student receives a high-quality education through teaching, individualized instruction, and an emphasis on building strong relationships with the children and their families. Great Oaks has a culture of lofty academic expectations, predicated on the belief that every child can learn and earn a degree from a four-year institution.

When it comes to their educators, Great Oaks' ultimate goal is to create a pipeline of talented educators both within and beyond their network. They offer a pathway to a Master's degree and teacher certification through a residency program. This program blends expertise in pedagogy, educational theory and real-world classroom training. It is led by faculty from the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

In at #3 is Dwight School. At this international institution, staff is dedicated to crafting a personalized journey for every student based on individual interests and passions. They call this mission igniting the "spark of genius" in every child. Personalized learning, together with community and global vision, are the three pillars upon which a Dwight School education rests.

As one of New York City's oldest independent academic institutions, Dwight School dates its history back to 1872. Not only does the school have three separate locations and one athletic center and summer camp in New York City, it also has locations in London, England, Seoul, South Korea, Shanghai, China, and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In at #4 is Brooklyn Prospect Charter School. This K through 12 college preparatory community teaches a diverse student body to have a positive impact on society and a lifelong passion for learning. First opened in September 2009 with just one hundred sixth graders, it now welcomes over 1,450 students each day.

CEO Daniel Rubenstein strives to build schools that are not only diverse in student body and staff, but also wholly inclusive in all aspects of the social and academic experience. He believes that students learn and grow by being exposed to difference and by being challenged in the classroom.

Finally at #5 is Success Academy Charter Schools, which holds the mission to build exceptional, world-class public schools that prove that children from all backgrounds can succeed in college and life. They also advocate across the country to change public policies that prevent many children from having access to equal opportunities.

Founded in 2006, Success Academy is the largest and highest-performing free, public education network in New York City. Admission is open to all New York State children, including those with special needs and English language learners. Students are admitted by a random lottery held each April. Success Academy has operated forty-five academic institutions serving eighteen thousand students. Across the network, over three-fourths of its kids are from low-income households.
