Meet the Mind Behind Milk Jar Cookies

In Depth

Chocolate mousse, black forest cake, tiramisu: is a meal considered complete if it doesn't include dessert? Baking is a precise and difficult art form, and sometimes it's better to leave it to the professionals. Here, in no particular order, are a few companies that have excelled in the art of creating confections.

#1 is Milk Jar Cookies, started by long-time cookie baker Courtney Cowan, who left her job as a TV post-production producer to pursue her dream of opening a cookie shop. Alongside her husband, designer Adam Tiller, she opened her first brick and mortar shop in the Mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles in the spring of 2013.

The menu is simple: customers can order freshly baked cookies to pair with locally sourced milk, ice cream, and coffee. Options include chocolate pecan caramel and oatmeal chocolate chip, among others. The staff hand-rolls every cookie and bakes them in small batches. Those who reside outside of Southern California can order the cookies to be delivered to their doorstep.

Coming in at #2 is Ooh La La Dessert Boutique. Texans with a sweet tooth will find fresh, made-from-scratch desserts, including award-winning cupcakes, cakes, pies, cookies, and more, all crafted by pastry chef Vanessa O'Donnell. The shop also has a seasonal menu, baking for special occasions such as Administrative Professionals Day and Cinco de Mayo.

O'Donnell is a graduate of the Art Institute of Houston's Baking and Pastry program and is a native Texan. She baked her first dessert when she was nine years old, and decided to open up Ooh La La after an internship at the Houston Country Club. The flagship cafe serves smoothies and coffee and offers free wi-fi. Customers can dine in, carry out, or even drive-thru.

Our #3 entry is Elizabeth's Cake Emporium, founded in 2008. It is a luxury wedding cake purveyor, offering personalized nuptial desserts with a variety of flavors, including Triple Chocolate Delight, Vanilla Ripple, Luscious Lemon, and Cookies and Cream. On your big day, the bakeshop will personally deliver and set up your creation.
