Inside the Mind of a Serial Killer

In Depth

The idea of a serial killer on the loose is so terrifying because you know they've already gotten away with murder several times, and there's no telling when they'll strike again. With that in mind, here are nine chilling books about serial killers, listed in no particular order.

First up, at #1, we have "The Killing of Bobbi Lomax" by Cal Moriarty. In 1983, three bombs detonate around Canyon County, killing prom queen Bobbi Lomax and property investor Peter Gudsen. Detectives Sinclair and Alvarez are assigned to figure out who targeted the victims and why, and their best lead is the only person who survived the attacks, a rare book dealer named Clark Houseman. Their case gets increasingly complicated as their investigation leads them to suspect the local church, which holds a lot of power over the town.

Next, at #2, is "Hindsight" by Melanie Casey. Cass Lehman has the incredibly useful, yet terrifying, power to see and even experience a person's death from their perspective. When a woman is murdered in their small town of Jewel Bay, she offers to use her abilities to help detective Ed Dyson with his investigation. They must learn to work together to find the killer before more innocent people die, but they have to tread carefully, as Cass may be the next target.

At #3 is "Between the Carries." Written by Jamie Sheffield, it's the third entry of his "Tyler Cunningham" series, which revolves around the adventures of the titular hero, a talented detective whose only weakness is his inability to understand people's true motives. When a friend asks for his help, he reluctantly agrees and catches the attention of a dangerous murderer. Using himself as bait, he hopes to identify and catch the killer before he can harm anyone else.

Next up, at #4, we have "The Axeman's Jazz" by Ray Celestin. Michael Talbot is leading the hunt for the eponymous murderer, who's causing widespread panic in New Orleans. Talbot's former mentor, ex-cop Luca d'Andrea, also rushes to solve the mystery before the authorities blame the killings on the mafia. Elsewhere, Pinkerton employee Ida stumbles upon a clue that leads her and her musician friend Louis Armstrong to conduct their own investigation, putting their lives at risk.

At #5 is "Beauty and Bloodshed" by Lorine S. Thomas. When asked to investigate the death of a prostitute, detective Joseph Hall dismisses it as just another homicide case. Soon, another woman's body turns up, making him believe that a serial killer is loose in New York City. With the help of his partner, Jacobs, and a medical examiner named Reece, he has to find and apprehend the perpetrator before he can claim another victim.

Next, at #6, is "The One That Got Away" by Joe Clifford. Alex Salerno is the sole survivor among the many girls abducted and killed in the small town of Reine back in the early 2000s. Several years later, in the same town, a girl named Kira Shanks goes missing and is presumed dead. This prompts reporter Noah Lee to request an interview with Alex, who reluctantly agrees. She soon realizes that there's more to Kira's case than meets the eye, and her recent involvement may have put her life at risk once again.

Next up, at #7, we have "The Bench" by Linda Rawlins. When tragedy strikes her family, Dr. Amy Daniels decides to leave the city and move to the quiet town of Rocky Meadow, Vermont. When people start dying under mysterious circumstances, it's up to her to identify the killer before more lives are lost. Helping Daniels with her search is Michael Lauretta, a pastor and psychologist who counsels fellow priests.

At #8 is "The Stranger You Seek" by Amanda Kyle Williams. A deadly killer is prowling the streets of Atlanta, taunting the media with letters and threats. Desperate to put an end to the violence, police lieutenant Aaron Rauser enlists the help of Keye Street, a former FBI profiler who now runs a private investigation agency. As Keye comes closer to unmasking the murderer's true identity, she finds herself becoming the next target, and tensions rise when she realizes that the person she's looking for is someone close to her.

Finally, at #9, we have "The Cruelest Cut" by Rick Reed. Detective Jack Murphy and his partner are assigned to solve the case of a brutal serial killer who taunts the police by leaving messages inside the victims' bodies. It gets personal when they realize that the perpetrator is someone from Jack's past, and when one of the cryptic messages warns them that there will be more death, they have to hurry and catch the elusive murderer before he strikes again.
