Editor's Notes

March 02, 2021:

It was a relatively straightforward round of updates, as the Esright Lounge was the only new omission we made, due to the model not being available at the time of this update.

Considering that the Lounge was a big, comfy model, the new option we replaced it with comes in sharp contrast. The Okeysen Gaming Chair – while certainly a recliner, and one that’s design definitely takes ergonomics into account – joins the Hbada Adjustable on this list as a model that’s more of a reclining office chair than a piece of living room furniture. These two definitely share some design similarities, but we chose to rank the Gaming Chair a bit higher up, as we appreciated its superior padding — not to mention its integrated massage cushion, which is intended to relieve lower back pain.

If ergonomics are of secondary concern to you, depending what priorities you are attaching to this purchase, you might be better served by another one of our specialized lists. We separately maintain rankings for niche categories like oversized recliners, swiveling recliners and electric recliners.

This update brings you another motorized option, the Ashley Furniture Yandel, which will have you reclining comfortably with the simple touch of a button. Its high back and thick cushions make it easy to sink right in after a long day. It features generous sizing and a sturdy, corner-blocked frame with a metal reinforced seat. The faux-leather upholstery is what keeps the price down, yet it truly does have an elegant, refined look. It comes in black or brown (which is called “Saddle”) and is designed and manufactured by a company that has been in the furniture and accessories business since 1945.

Making its departure from our list is the Best Choice Products Electric, amidst reports of mechanical problems and things that wobble, such as its ottoman.

If you’re strictly in the market for a motorized option, check out our list of best electric recliners, which come in a variety of fabrics and sizes and are easy to adjust into just the right position.

When it comes to your spine health, your posture can make a big difference, which is why it's so important to support the muscles in your back and neck when sitting for long periods of time. While not a substitute for medical care, an ergonomic chair can lessen the negative effects of prolonged sitting and provide some relief from pain and discomfort.

The Human Touch Perfect Chair PC-420 is a big investment, but it comes with a very rare endorsement from the World Federation of Chiropractic as a tool that can help deal with back pain and spinal disorders. Its zero-gravity design uses your body's own weight to change position, unlike others with motors or levers that can wear out over time. The Fjords Leather Muldal uses a similar mechanism to self-adjust based on how the weight of your body is distributed, so if you change positions, it moves with you. It comes in two sizes, and you can choose from four wood finishes and five different colors of leather. If you're working with a tighter budget, the Tuoze Theater is both stylish and affordable. Just note that it's also rather small, which is great if you don't have much space, but may be uncomfortable if you're tall.

We've also included a few power lift chairs for those who have limited mobility or are recovering from an injury. The Domesis Renu Wall Hugger only needs four inches of clearance between itself and the wall, so you won't have to place it in the middle of your living room in order to use its lift and recline functions. It's extremely easy to assemble and even easier to operate using its two-button controller.

After deciding that the pen was mightier than the pliers, Canadian electrical contractor William Rhoda abandoned his career and headed back to college, where he majored in marketing and advertising and won a scholarship along the way to earning a diploma in creative communications. His past career landed him a depth of knowledge in tools and hardware, while his current career schooled him in audio, video and camera equipment. During his leisure time, he’s learned lots about outdoor gear, and years of tiresome backyard maintenance have taught him all about pools and hot tubs. His recreational pursuits include rest, relaxation and revolutionary action, and his roommate’s a hairless cat.
