The puredown 800 Fill Power now leads, because its label states both a high share of real goose down and a fill power, which few comforters here do. The C&W Goose Down 90% gives most of that for far less. The most useful thing we found is how often "goose down" on a label means down fiber or feathers, so every pick now says what its fill really is, including the Serta Goose Feather Down Fiber, which is mostly feather and priced that way.
Five earlier picks can't be bought anymore: the Down Under Jasper Hutterite, Hotel Collection UltraClean, Downlite European Luxury, Downright Logana and Eddie Bauer Luxury 370. In this update, we replaced some of the items to ensure that each complies with law label standards, which require that any comforter labeled as “white goose down” contains at least 75% white goose down filler. The Down Under Jasper Hutterite is manufactured in Canada by a certified member of the country’s Down Association, which ensures quality bedding products. It’s available in a full range of sizes, including California king, and its outer shell is 100% cotton with a 500 thread count. It holds it shape well and can be placed outside occasionally during nice weather to air it out and refresh the contents.
For a hypoallergenic choice that won’t keep you up sneezing all night, look to the Hotel Collection UltraClean, which features an attractive geometric jacquard fabric with handy corner duvet tabs. This one features 700 fill power and is conveniently machine washable, unlike many others. From a bedding company founded in 1975, the Downright Cascada is made by hand in Brooklyn, New York, with soft, premium down of European geese. It’s naturally insulating and features baffle box construction. A higher fill count option from the same manufacturer is the Siberian white goose down Downright Logana. Both of these choices are responsibly sourced, meaning there is no live plucking or force feeding of the geese involved.
The final new addition is the Blue Ridge Hotel Grand Naples which, like some others on the list, features a baffle box construction which ensures the contents are evenly distributed via pockets throughout, to ensure there aren’t any cold spots. Its filler will stay intact, thanks to its double piping construction.

A goose down comforter is sure to provide a warm, cozy night’s rest, and many are made with a hypoallergenic, cotton outer shell that keeps itching and sneezing at bay. Some even come with loops that make them easy to insert into a duvet cover.
Coming on board in today’s update is the Downlite European Luxury, which features baffle box construction, meaning fabric strips are sewn between the top and bottom covers. This creates multiple sections throughout, which evenly distributes the fill and allows it to reach its full loft. While it needs to be dry-cleaned, rest assured you should only have to have this done once every few years if you keep it inside of a duvet cover.
Retaining the top spot in our selection is the Egyptian Bedding Luxurious, with pockets that are packed with ample amounts of down, for warmth and loft that are hard to match. This one too can be anchored to a duvet cover, thanks to sewn-in loops. It’s attractively priced, compared to many others, and is made from Long Staple Giza Cotton, which has been grown in the lush Nile River Valley since the time of the Pharoahs.

Down, Down Fiber Or Feather: Read The Fill Line
Down fiber is something else: loose strands that have broken off down and feathers.
The word goose on a label tells you the bird, not how much down is inside. Down is the soft cluster under a bird's feathers, with no quill, and it's what makes a comforter light and lofty (Wikipedia). Under the U.S. standard most testing labs and makers follow, a fill labeled simply "down" must be at least 75 percent down (IDFL).
Down fiber is something else: loose strands that have broken off down and feathers. The standard keeps it out of the down count (IDFL definitions), because it packs flatter and traps less air. So 80 percent goose down fiber is not 80 percent down, and a comforter that is 90 percent feather fiber is a feather comforter with a little down mixed in.
A quick way to sort the picks: the puredown and C&W labels state a high share of real down, the Egyptian Bedding and Pacific Coast labels state down fiber, and the Serta is mostly feather. When a label only says "down and feather" with no ratio, assume feather makes up a good part of it.
Fill Power, Fill Weight And How Warm It Feels
Fill power measures loft: how many cubic inches one ounce of down fills. Higher numbers mean more warmth per ounce, so a high-fill-power comforter can be warm and still light (Wikipedia). Fill weight is the other half. Total warmth comes from both, so a 600-fill comforter with more down can be warmer than an 800-fill one with less (Feathered Friends).
Many budget labels give a fill weight but no fill power. Heavy fill weight with no fill power usually means feather or fiber doing the work, which feels heavier for the same warmth.
Construction matters too. Baffle boxes are fabric walls sewn between the top and bottom layers, so the down can rise to full height and stays put. Sewn-through stitching joins the two layers directly, which is cheaper but leaves thin seams where heat escapes. L.L.Bean sells its comforters with sewn-in baffle boxes for that reason (L.L.Bean). Pinch pleats, the puffy pinched pattern, are mostly about looks.
Allergies, Washing And Where The Down Comes From
A true allergy to feathers is uncommon. Sneezing under old bedding is more often caused by dust mites that build up over time (Wikipedia). Washed, cleaned down and a tightly woven cotton shell help, and a washable duvet cover keeps the comforter itself clean longer.
Follow the care label. Several picks are dry clean only. The washable ones need a large front-loading machine, a gentle cycle and a long, low-heat dry with dryer balls, because down that stays damp clumps and can mildew. Most arrive vacuum packed, so give them a day to loft before judging the thickness.
On sourcing, live plucking is condemned and banned in many countries but still reported in some supply chains. The Responsible Down Standard audits farms against it. Many sellers claim RDS certification; ask for the certificate if it matters to you, since a claim on a sales page isn't proof.
