The 10 Best Steel Targets

Updated November 14, 2020 by Shilo Urban

This wiki has been updated 17 times since it was first published in October of 2018. Shooting paper targets can be fun, but it quickly gets expensive — and replacing them every few rounds is a real drag. If you want something that will last, these steel models can stand up to a ton of abuse, and the noise they make when hit lets you know how accurate you are without needing to move. Just be sure to use the proper caliber for your model, and stay the recommended distance away. When users buy our independently chosen editorial selections, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Editor's Notes

November 11, 2020:

For this update, we've added three very different designs in a wide range of prices, from quite affordable to splurge-worthy. The Do-All Outdoors Popper is a very budget-friendly option that you mount right into the ground with a couple of stakes, which are included.

If you're looking for something a little more deluxe, consider the Highwild Complete, a heavy-duty stand with four targets. You can switch out the gongs to customize your experience and to increase the difficulty level as your skills improve. The Birchwood Casey Dueling Tree gives you six paddles for practicing your aim, each of which flips to the opposite side when hit.

We've removed the Ar500 Target Solutions Silhouette Stand because its price had grown too high when compared with similar models, and the Caldwell Gong Kit is gone because its reviews were no longer up to par. The CleanCutMetal Hostage is no longer available.

There's also a new item in the Special Honors category, which will particularly appeal to fans of Jurassic Park. Finally, we've updated the information on several listings, including the Caldwell Rimfire Resetting, Titan Attachments, and Ar500 Target Solutions.

October 25, 2018:

Included the Caldwell Rimfire Resetting for its utility as a pistol target, but penalized it due to the low quality of the included stickers, as well as issues with the frame moving around when the targets were struck. Gave the High Caliber Animal Silhouette high marks for being fun to shoot, even though their odd shapes might be challenging for novices.
