The 10 Best Hydroponic Starter Kits For Beginners

Updated October 19, 2020 by Brett Dvoretz

This wiki has been updated 13 times since it was first published in September of 2020. Hydroponic starter kits are a simple way to cultivate your own herbs, fruits, or vegetables, and the method of feeding and watering allows you to ignore many of the tasks associated with gardening. Depending on the model, these kits are small enough to fit on your kitchen countertop or self-contained in a cupboard or lightproof tent, and should help ensure your harvest will be bigger and tastier. Editor's Notes

October 08, 2020:

This list contains a variety of the best hydroponic starter kits for beginners to suit the needs of different gardeners and budding horticulturists. Hydroponics can be a complicated way to grow large crops, but these are all easy to start, the most obvious difference being the size of the units.

We added the TopoLite Complete Growing System because, although it may seem complicated and looks more professional than the rest of the choices on the list, it is a great way for beginners who want to grow leafy greens, fruits, or vegetables in bulk. The Aerospring Indoor Tower System is also able to yield large crops, but its price may put some home growers off, although it is a very high-quality choice and should deliver three servings of your favorite vegetable or salad a day.

This list differs from indoor grow kits in that they are easier to set up and maintain, like the Click and Grow Smart Garden 3 which can be ordered with a variety of 50 extra seeded grow pods to make growing easy for you. In contrast, the SavvyGrow Vertical Herb Garden will not fit on a tabletop but you could easily find space for it in your home, and it comes with its own light source.

Lighting timers are vital if you want to regulate the 16 hours on, eight hours off schedule which is important for the speed of growth as well as size. All the kits that are supplied with lights have timers. The Moistenland Indoor Herb Garden has height adjustable lamps but is not as effective as the AeroGarden Bounty, which makes the list due to its adjustable lighting, combined with a six-inch trellis which helps to guide certain types of herbs and vegetables.
