The 10 Best Hammock Chairs

Updated July 16, 2021 by Christopher Thomas

This wiki has been updated 30 times since it was first published in July of 2015. If you're looking for a great way to add some comfortable seating to your home, you might want to consider a hammock chair. They're ideal for enjoying the fresh air on your patio or elsewhere in your backyard, and can even be installed indoors, if that's your preference. They also tend to have a much smaller footprint than traditional hammocks, making them a suitable alternative for small spaces. Hammaka Hammocks One of the few complaints you'll commonly hear about hammocks is that the logistics involved with hanging them are a pain. In addition to offering a nice selection of hammocks and hammock chairs, this company offers several convenient stands that make hanging your hammock a breeze – including a couple of interesting models that can be mounted to your truck's trailer hitch. hammaka.com

Editor's Notes

July 16, 2021:

It's hard to get more relaxed than when you're swinging in a hammock on a hot day, but full-size models can be tough to get in and out of and are generally very bulky. We're happy to share that our previous selections are all still available and represent great values. In particular, the Oncloud Sky Chair Deluxe is remarkably well made for the price, so it's retained the #1 spot. For something a little different, we like the Best Choice Hanging Chaise Lounger, while kids will appreciate the compact and fun Outree Kids Hanging Swing.

April 15, 2020:

During this round of updates, we removed the Clarity Children’s Pod, Quility Therapy Swing and Patio Watcher due to availability issues, and in their places we added the Vivohome Hanging – a 100%-cotton offering that comes with a 40-foot string of LEDs, the Outree Kids Hanging Swing – which works great as a sensory swing for children with autism, and the Oncloud Sky Chair Deluxe – a luxurious model that comes equipped with an optional footrest and cup holder.

A few things to think about for in this category:

Installation: For the most part, these units are simple enough to hang – providing you have access to a suitable, sturdy tree branch, or already own a hammock chair stand. But, if you don’t have either of those things going for you, you might want to consider a freestanding model like the Best Choice Hanging Chaise Lounger. If you’re planning on ceiling mounting your chair indoors, keep an eye out for models like the Outree Kids Hanging Swing that come with all the necessary hardware.

Comfort: While models like the Sorbus Macrame and Vivohome Hanging can be restricting, in that their design limits users to upright sitting, models like the Hammock Sky Brazilian and Large Caribbean can lend themselves to horizontal lounging. The Oncloud Sky Chair Deluxe comes with an optional footrest and pillow for your head, and the Sorbus Swing comes with a comfortable pair of cushions.

Capacity: As single-person offerings, most the options in this category have maximum-load ratings that are suitable for most adults – with the Large Caribbean boasting a 300-pound capacity, while the Vivohome Hanging features a 265-pound limit. One exception worth noting is the Outree Kids Hanging Swing, which is intended for children and can only support a maximum of 100 pounds.
