The state of California is known as one of the great hotbeds for beer brewing in the world. Thanks to its ideal climate and melting pot of cultures and ideas, the state has managed to create some of the most popular and well-regarded brews made today. If you are looking for a new place to enjoy an expertly crafted beer, there are some great options to add to your list. In no particular order, here are 5 fantastic breweries in California.

Coming in at #1 is Duck Foot Brewing Company in San Diego, California. Duck Foot Brewing Company was created by Matt DelVecchio. He decided to start his own brewery after discovering a novel way to make beer with a natural enzyme that removes gluten from the beverage. This made it a perfect option for those with gluten intolerance. Since opening in 2015, this brewery has won two Great American Beer Festival awards.

Duck Foot Brewing Company's homemade creations include a blonde ale, a honey ale, a West Coast style IPA, and a highly alcoholic double white IPA. It has many more options in the form of its limited releases. Duck Foot Brewing Company prides itself on offering a beer lineup that always features variety. Some of its beers are light-bodied, some are big and strong. Others are hoppy and bitter, while some have a touch of biscuity malt sweetness.

Up next at the #2 spot is Dust Bowl Brewing Company. This brewery has three separate California locations, with a pair of locations in its hometown of Turlock and one located in the coastal city of Monterey. Dust Bowl first got its start when co-creators Brett Tate and Don Oliver came together to start crafting high-quality beers. In May 2009, the two produced its first beer known as Hops of Wrath IPA.

Each Dust Bowl Brewing Company location offers its patrons an opportunity to enjoy craft beer alongside a diverse food menu. In all, Dust Bowl Brewing Company offers a multitude of options that come in either cans or as draft only experiences. This brewery has gained major notoriety both in the state of California and beyond.

At #3 is Anchor Brewing in San Francisco. Unlike many American breweries, which date their beginnings back to the last century, this establishment can trace its own beginning back to 1871. It all started when German brewer Gottlieb Brekle bought an old beer-and-billiards saloon on Pacific Street and transformed it into an American brewery. Years later it was renamed Anchor. While prohibition effectively shut down the operation in 1920, the company was reborn in 1933.

Years later it was renamed Anchor.

Given its history, it should not come as a surprise that today, Anchor Brewing remains one of the most traditional breweries in America and a pioneer of the craft brewing movement. Its most popular beer, Anchor Steam Beer, is known the world over, while its small-batch homemade brews are still made in the brewery's copper brewhouse in San Francisco.

Coming in at #4 is The Bruery, a boutique craft brewery located in Orange County that specializes in barrel-aged and experimental ales. Founded as a small, friend and family run business in 2008, The Bruery takes its moniker from founder Patrick Rue's last name. This brewery prides itself on developing imaginative beers and flavors, as well as constantly pursuing improvement in its business and product.

At The Bruery, they brew dozens of original beers each year and its list of inspirations and ingredients is constantly growing. Its collection of oak barrels has also become a primary element of the brewery. Nearly half of the beer it produces is aged in wine or spirit barrels, which bring forth flavors reminiscent of the Belgian countryside or classic American distillers.

Finally at the #5 spot is Stone Brewing. Founded by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner, Stone Brewing has operated facilities on both American coasts. Its original facility is located in Escondido, California and its second is in Richmond, Virginia. Not only does it operate several restaurants and tap rooms, it has also distributed its beer in all 50 states and more than 40 countries worldwide.

Stone Brewing's facilities in Escondido opened back in 2005 and its 55,000-square-foot facility served as its sole brewing operation until it expanded in 2016. In all, this brewing company offers year-round releases, special releases, seasonal beers, and Stone collaborations where it works with other breweries that it's inspired by.
