The 10 Best Floor Registers

Updated September 06, 2020 by Allean Phelps

This wiki has been updated 12 times since it was first published in July of 2020. Vent covers and registers do more than just seal the hole in the floor. They also have a damper behind the grille that allows you to control the level and direction of the airflow. They are available in many different sizes and styles to suit your home, and we have included a wide enough variety in this selection to suit most people's personal tastes and budgetary limitations. When users buy our independently chosen editorial recommendations, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Editor's Notes

September 03, 2020:

Floor registers are ideal for controlled air conditioning and heating systems. Similar to the way the vents work in a car, they let you manage how much, if any, air moves into the room, and the path it will take once it enters.

Besides aesthetics, there are a few things to look for when buying a floor register. The first is size. Most homes have openings that measure 4 inches by 10 inches or 4 inches by 12 inches. But you'll still need to measure to make sure it will fit. And just as you would measure the space inside a door jamb to determine if a loveseat or sofa could fit through, you need to measure the inside of the duct gap to make sure the body can slide into the hole.

The next thing to consider is the damper. This section lies behind the faceplate and fits inside the duct opening. Generally, it has vertical flues or slots that open or closed with a knob or lever. You'll need to choose between plastic or metal. Plastic dampers like the ones on the Accord AOFROML410 will not rust, but they don't provide the same rigidity as metal ones on the Continental Industries Vent Cover Set. Foot-controlled models like the EZ-FLO 61601 make it easy to adjust the dampers without bending down. However, they can be distracting. Units with concealed levers like the one found on the Homewell Red Oak floor register appear more attractive and blend it with the overall decor.
