An ottoman is a highly-functional piece of furniture that is equally at home on a balcony or deck as it is in a living room or bedroom. They often have storage space within and can be used as a stool when extra seating is needed, or as a footstool when lounging. The items featured here are made from rattan, which is a natural material known for its durability and earthy tones. Editor's Notes

July 02, 2020:

Ottomans were first introduced in Europe in the 18th century, and originate from Turkey. They are now enjoying a comeback and are gaining popularity as a multipurpose piece of home furniture that is flexible in style and design. Ottomans can be an affordable extra seating option, or used as a footstool or coffee table. They often feature hollow storage areas, which can be useful for blankets, magazines, footwear, and a whole array of indoor and outdoor paraphernalia. The ones we are reviewing here are specifically made from wicker, which works well for this type of furniture, as it is not only hardwearing but has natural coloring that complements most interior decor styles. Also included are a number of options that are made from resin wicker, a man-made alternative that is suitable for use outdoors, these can be matched with your patio furniture and seating, too.

Natural wicker furniture can encompass a variety of materials such as bullrush, seagrass, or rattan, all with different textures and coloring. For example, the Household Essentials Rolling Seat and the Birdrock Home Rectangle are made from seagrass, which has a light to mid-brown color and is quite coarse to the touch. The Eshow Cube Set, on the other hand, is a much darker bullrush material with a thicker weave, and the International Caravan Arizona is made from abaca, the stem of a banana leaf, and has a multi-toned appearance. The Spice Islands Round Ottoman and the SK New Interiors Krit use a more traditional blend of rattan and wicker that is certainly more hardwearing, but much less flexible. Options with internal storage like the Household Essentials Rolling Seat or the Eshow Cube Set usually have hardwood frames, making them very solid and stable.

The three outdoor options we considered all utilize all-weather wicker and have powder-coated steel frames. The Better Homes & Gardens Outdoor is a large option that can comfortably seat two people and has ample under-seat storage for blankets, pillows, or even the kids' toys. The BrylaneHome Roma is an upholstered choice that is available in a nice range of colors, and the PatioFestival X-Leg has a high-quality, plush cushion that is water and stain-resistant.
