The 10 Best Shawarma Machines

Updated August 21, 2020 by Luke Mitchell

This wiki has been updated 12 times since it was first published in May of 2020. The doner kebab originated in Turkey and spread throughout Arabia, where it was called a "shawarma," and Greece, where it was called a "gyro," both of which roughly translate into "turning," due to the manner in which they are cooked. No matter which name you use, these kabob machines all offer the same functionality and are known worldwide as a means for preparing a convenient and tasty meal. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Editor's Notes

August 20, 2020:

Usually served inside a flatbread with salad and spicy dressings, the doner kebob offers a convenient, quick, and inexpensive snack that is both filling and flavorsome. They are easy to eat on-the-go and are an exotic alternative to a standard sandwich, with meat that is seasoned and processed into a drum, which may be straight-sided or conical.

A shawarma machine vertically rotates this meat next to a heat source, and thin slices are shaved off with a long, flat knife at the desired thickness, while the outer layer continues to cook. This reduces preparation time, as the filling doesn't need to be cooked to order and can be served hot at a moment's notice. The machines in this ranking all function in this manner, and can be divided into those that are better suited to private home use, and those that are more suitable for commercial food outlets and restaurants.

In the home-use category, are the NutriChef Countertop, Nutrichef Multi-Function, and the Wonderper Vertical. These all have small enough footprints to sit upon a kitchen countertop or table and can be stored away in a cabinet when not in use. They are all heated with electric elements, and therefore don't require natural gas or propane canisters. The Li Bai 2 Burner is also electrically-powered, but is durable, made from stainless steel, and would be suitable for the home or for small-scale commercial catering.

In the commercial category, we selected the Munsinn 2 Burner, Bioexcel Vertical, Spinning Grillers 5-in-1, TurcoBazaar Automatic, M.D.S Cuisine Cookwares Heavy Duty, and the Spinning Grillers Commercial. These are all gas-fired and connect to either propane tanks or a natural gas mains supply. We have included a selection of two, three, and four-burner models, which accommodate differently-sized doners, the largest of which is the Spinning Grillers Commercial, being able to hold up to 85 pounds of meat.
