There is no denying the thrill of driving a good car really fast; of momentarily obliterating the world and its obligations through speed, and, as Dominic Toretto of the Fast and Furious franchise memorably put it, living life "a quarter mile at a time." But getting involved in auto racing requires a lot of equipment and access to closed courses, at least if you want to do it legally. This list, presented in no particular order, looks at five companies that can fuel your need for speed.

At #1, Formula Hybrid is a competition that takes place every spring at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire. Run by the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, and part of the Society of Automotive Engineers Collegiate Design Series, it offers an interdisciplinary design and engineering challenge for undergraduate and graduate university students.

Bringing teams from around the world together to compete at an international speedway, competitors generally spend at least eight months building and preparing their vehicles. Cars must have either a mechanical-electrical hybrid or electric-only drivetrain and pass rigorous safety inspections. The fun and educational competition events test skills across a variety of engineering disciplines.

#2 on the list is the Nascar Hall of Fame. Located in Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina, it's an interactive entertainment attraction honoring the history and heritage of the professional auto racing league. Opened in 2010, the high-tech venue is designed to educate and impress visitors. The complex includes artifacts, hands-on exhibits, a theater, the Hall of Honor, a restaurant, a gift shop, and a broadcast studio.

Each year, three inductees from a pool of fifteen significant contributors to the sport are selected to the Nascar Hall of Fame. The organization also presents the Squier-Hall Award to honor the contributions of media to the league's success. Additionally, the Landmark Award is given to recipients who contribute to racing in other ways, such as track facilities and sponsors. Winners are named during an Induction Weekend that is open to the public.

The #3 position is held by Multimatic Motorsports, the competition arm of Multimatic Engineering, a major Canadian firm in vehicle dynamics and development. The company touts the endurance racing wins and titles that the team has accumulated since 1992 as evidence of its technical advancements and capabilities.

Motorsports also provides the parent company with a kind of R&D laboratory for innovative engineering, creative thinking, and speedy problem solving. Multimatic's programs in this arena encompass car design and build, track support and turn-key competition management, and the team's primary test track: Calabogie Motorsports Park, just outside Ottawa, Ontario.

Coming in at #4, it's CXC Simulations, a high-tech engineering firm that has made advances in the design and manufacture of advanced personal racing simulation equipment. The company's devices are designed not only for professional race teams, but also motoring clubs, racing schools, retail, and home use. It was founded in 2007 by Chris Considine, the son of noted automotive journalist Tim Considine and a former racer himself.

Each of CXC's simulators is individually assembled and tested in its Los Angeles facilities, with the company offering installation and full support after sale. In addition to individual units, CXC also outfits customers with simulation centers, entertainment environments containing multiple racing simulators that allow customers to pilot speedy Formula cars or Four-Wheel-Drive vehicles, among other options, in immersive virtual settings.

Finishing up our list at #5, Monticello Motor Club, located 90 minutes outside New York City in the Catskill Mountains region, features 4.1 miles of smooth race-grade asphalt. Members enjoy access to a variety of tracks and courses for high-performance driving without speed limits. Built on a disused 1950s regional airport, the facilities were designed by driving champion Brian Redman in collaboration with engineer Bruce Hawkins.

Monticello's full-time team of professional driving and racing coaches offer instruction to help advance track skills by developing customized training specific to a driver's unique skill set. There are a variety of other driving experiences available. Teen motorsports camps teach young people valuable racing and defensive driving maneuvers. There are additional racing schools open to all ages, as well as private lessons, group sessions, and one-day, "Taste of the Club" opportunities.
