Editor's Notes

December 31, 2020:

Improvements in technology and connectivity are allowing for greater control over everyday operations through our smart devices. In this update, we made sure that the remote-controlled options are the most up to date available, but also focused on outlets that can be controlled through a smartphone, as these provide greater functionality such as daily scheduling, countdown timers, and sunrise and sunset power modes.

We included the HBN Heavy Duty Wireless as a good choice for power-hungry outdoor electronics such as sprinkler systems. The Treatlife Smart Dimmer was added as it allows the brightness levels of connected lights to be adjusted via a smartphone and the Smart Life app. Finally, we added the twin outlet Etekcity ESO15-TB, which is controlled by the VeSync app, allowing control over each individual socket and providing monitoring of your device's power consumption.

November 28, 2019:

This round of updates, we eliminated the Oittm Wi-Fi, due to availability issues, and replaced it with the Vavofo Smart Socket VAV-1027-PL, an alternative option with app functionality. We also added the Dewenwils Power Strip Stake, which (as its name might suggest) is a stake-mounted that can be connected to an extension cord and driven into your lawn, providing your backyard with six outlets – ample for most situations.

A few things to think about while perusing these offerings:

Timer Options: Some options can be quite limiting in this respect. The Woods 32555WD, for example, essentially offers toggle functionality without any means of timing. This might be fine for some people’s purposes, but others will prefer options like the Dewenwils Power Strip Stake, which offers dusk-to-dawn timing and several countdown-from-dusk options. If you need any more control then that, well, that brings me to my next point…

App Functionality: Offerings like the Koolertron Wireless and Vavofo Smart Socket VAV-1027-PL can integrate seamlessly with popular smart home systems and offer you an unprecedented level of control via smartphone applications that are available free to download. If you’re reasonably tech savvy and looking for the most utility possible, this is the way to go.

Remote Range: If you aren’t going to opt for an option with app functionality, at least make sure that you’re selecting an option with sufficient remote-control range. A hundred feet within line of sight seems to be a reasonable ask for this category, and one that several of our selections live up to, including the Dewenwils Power Strip Stake and the Fosmon Weatherproof.
